Em agosto de 2013, o espanhol Kiko Martínez, 28, obteve o cinturão super-galo da Federação Internacional de Boxe (FIB) – uma das quatro grandes da modalidade – e em dezembro da mesma temporada lutando na sai cidade Elche superou o ex-campeão mundial Jeffrey Mathebula da África do Sul por nocaute no 9º round.

Sua próxima batalha será dia 23 de abril no Japão diante do ex-campeão dos galos do Conselho Mundial de Boxe (CMB) Hozumi Hasegawa, 33, que manteve longevo domínio da categoria e agora quer uma nova coroa em sua lista. Hasegawa (33-4-0, 15 KO’s) é um ídolo em seu país – nação com tradição nos esportes de luta – e um lutador muito técnico.

Kiko (30-4-0, 22 KO’s) é um campeão em ascensão e para pagar as contas ainda se mantém dando aulas de boxe e trabalhando como garçom. Tem como exemplo maior o campeão dos médios CMB e seu empresário Sergio “Maravilla” Martínez da Argentina.

Além de Hasegawa vem sendo desafiado por outros nomes de destaque na sua divisão de peso como o cubano Guillermo “El Chacal” Rigondeaux supercampeão pela Associação Mundial de Boxe (AMB) e campeão pela Organização Mundial de Boxe (OMB). Em entrevista ao Terceiro Tempo fala de sua próxima batalha, movimentos nos bastidores e possíveis novos rivais.

Como se sentiu após a luta com Mathebula? Alguma coisa mudou em sua vida?

Me fez muito bem lutar diante do meu povo, meus amigos e próximo de casa. Agradeço muito a minha promotora Maravilla Box pelo esforço que fez para trazer uma disputa de título mundial para minha cidade, Elche.

Como está a preparação para lutar com Hozumi Hasegawa?

Está tudo muito bem. São três meses de preparação até subir ao ringue. Os irmãos Sarmiento (Gabriel e Pablo) são dois grandes treinadores e todos estamos fazendo um grande trabalho.

Qual é sua motivação para encarar Hasegawa?

Quero seguir defendendo meu cinturão. Me custou muito sofrimento para conquista-lo e espero defende-lo sempre em grandes lutas.

Seu manager e figura de inspiração Sergio “Maravilla” Martínez vai lutar em Nova York no mês de junho com Miguel Cotto. Por quê não está no mesmo card?

Sinceramente não sei, não controlo estas coisas. Imagino que seja por espaço no card, porque há um espaço entre a minha luta e a dele. Se Deus quiser estarei em Nova York apoiando Sergio.

A luta no Japão é uma estratégia de Maravilla Box para levar o nome da equipe e o seu para outro continente?

Não tenho ideia disso, deveria fazer esta pergunta para eles. Os japoneses trouxeram uma grande oferta para a mesa e não se poderia dizer “não”.

O cubano Guillermo Rigondeaux quer unificar os cinturões. Pensa em estar no mesmo ringue que ele? Se sim, quando?

Bem, primeiro quero acabar com Hozumi e depois veremos. Rigondeaux, Nonito (Donaire), (Leo) Santa Cruz... Todos eles estão em minha lista.

O que Rigondeaux tem que o diferencia dos demais?

É muito bom, o melhor. Para mim está à altura de (Floyd) Mayweather, tem enorme talento e é um grande campeão. Para mim seria uma honra lutar com ele.

Interview with Kiko Martínez

In August of 2013 the Spaniard Kiko Martínez, 28, obtained the super bantam weight title of International Boxing Federation (IBF) – one of the main four in the sport – and in December of the same season fighting in his city Elche he topped the former world champion Jeffrey Mathebula from South-Africa via KO in the ninth round.

His next battle will the April 23th in Japan before the ex-bantam world champion of World Boxing Council (WBC) Hozumi Hasegawa, 33, who had a long reign during his time and wishes a new crown to his list. Hasegawa (33-4-0, 15 KO’s) is an idol in his country which has a long tradition for sports combats and is also a very technical boxer.

Kiko (30-4-0, 22 KO’s) is an ascending champion and to make the ends holds a job teaching the sweet science and also moonlights as a waiter. He has as a role model the world middle weight champion of WBC and his manager the Argentine Sergio “Maravilla” Martínez.

Besides Hasegawa he was challenged by other top guns of his division like Cuban Guillermo “El Chacal” Rigondeaux who is the Superchampion of World Boxing Association (WBA) and champion of World Boxing Organization (WBO). In this interview to the Terceiro Tempo website he speaks out on his upcoming bout as also the backstage actions and his possible future rivals.

What did you fell after the match with Mathebula? Has anything changed in your life?

It made me feel pretty good because I was fighting before my people, my friends and close to home. I’m very thankful to my promoter Maravilla Box for their effort to bring a world title match to Elche which is my city.

What can you tell us about your preparation to face Hozumi Hasegawa?

Everything is going fine. I’ve been working out on this one for three months. The Sarmiento Brothers (Gabriel and Pablo) are great coaches and they’re doing a great job.

What is your motivation to face Hasegawa?

I want to go on defending my belt. I’ve suffered a lot to conquer it and I hope to defend it in big matches.

Your manager and role model Sergio “Maravilla” Martínez is going to fight Miguel Cotto in New York in June. Why you are not in the same card?

Sincerely I don’t know and I don’t control such things. I imagine it is because of slots because there is space between my bout and his. If Gods wants it I’ll be in New York supporting Sergio.

The fight in Japan is a strategy of Maravilla Box to take the teams and your name to the other continent?

I have no idea. You should ask this for them. The Japanese came with a big offer that we couldn’t say “no”.

Guillermo Rigondeaux wants to unify the belts. Have you ever thought about sharing the ring with him? If so when?

Well. First I want to finish off Hozumi then we can see what falls out. Rigondeaux, Nonito (Donaire), (Leo) Santa Cruz… They are all on my list.

What does Guillermo Rigondeaux has that the others don’t?

He is very good. The best. For me he is in the position of (Floyd) Mayweather as he is very talented and a great champion. For me it would be an honor to face him.
